In the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch, Phillip witnessed death and disaster firsthand, which had a big impact on him. When he transitioned from the Navy to civilian life, he became withdrawn, tried to cope with the pain using drugs, and eventually became homeless. He eventually sought help from VA and found a new purpose as a peer specialist.
