Matthew looked forward to becoming a U.S. Marine, but he received a cancer diagnosis shortly before deployment that made him feel like his body had betrayed him. He received a medical retirement and grew depressed. When Matthew became homeless, he decided to get help through VA. Treatment and taking up fencing helped him get back on his feet.
